My swimming lessons are held in a private pool in Derbyshire (Swadlincote).
Having a private swimming pool to yourself with no other swimming lessons taking place at the same time, will give you confidence to enjoy your swimming lessons in peace and quiet, learning to swim in an atmosphere that is conducive to learning and overcoming any fears or phobias you may have.
There is no conveyor belt attitude, all the time is geared to one adult swimming lessons over the 2 days.
The only time that 2 people are involved in taking swimming lessons is if they know each other, or are related. When this happens each person is taught on a one top one basis. Although I am now considering a ‘buddy system’ which means that 2 people can learn how to teach each other.
My private swimming pool is also beneficial for people who want to improve their swimming techniques as my pool is not just a learners pool but an endless pool.
When a person is needing special teaching owing to their anxieties or phobias regarding the water, my private swimming pool is just the right size. In other words it does not overwhelm them because of size, chlorine smell and noise.(I use unstablised chlorine, which is not as strong as the chlorine used in a leisure center) In fact many of my students have expressed their delight in the fact that the peace and quiet has given them the chance to concentrate when they learn how to swim.
On the other hand because I have an ‘endless pool’ I regularly teach Triathletes to perfect their stroke count in my private pool.
The triathlete needs to understand the special swimming techniques to give them a strong swim without the use to too much engery.
When I taught myself how to swim using the Total Immersion Method I was able to understand about the balance, stretch and how to ‘hold on to the water’. Although these methods were not fully explained, I am now able to demonstrate and give step by step explanation to my students as they learn to swim more effectively than I had originally been taught .
How I can do this with my swimming lessons simply because I was a non swimmer up until the age of 58, and had to battle with my own phobia and needed logic to understand how to get control of the water. So I had a lot of thinking to do when I started teaching adults how to swim by giving a person the same understanding I had gained through my own experiences of the water
